The Virginia State Dental Board was established to ensure that every dentist and dental hygienist practicing in this state meets minimum requirements for safe practice. The practice of these professions is a privilege granted by the State. The Board of Dental Examiners is responsible for licensure, monitoring and ensuring the safe practice of dentists and dental hygienists in their service to the people of Virginia.

The purpose of the Virginia State Dental Board is to ensure that the dental profession merit and receive the confidence of the public and that only qualified persons be permitted to practice dentistry and dental hygiene in the state of Virginia. The State Dental Board is entrusted to promote service excellence in dentistry and to protect the public through licensure, education and enforcement of standards with fairness and integrity.

The  Virginia State Dental Board regulates Dentist, Dental Hygienist, Dental Assistant II, Dental and Dental Hygienist Faculty, Dental and Dental Hygienist Temporary Permit, Restricted Volunteer,  Dentist-Temporary Resident, Dentist Volunteer, Oral/Maxillofacial Surgeon, Cosmetic Procedure Certification, Mobile Dental Facility / Portable Dental Operation Registration, Moderate Sedation Permit, and Deep Sedation/General Anesthesia Permit.

The Board of Dental Examiners is responsible for the protection of the public by governing and regulating the practice of dentistry and dental hygiene in Virginia.
